In 1928, 23-year-old Joseph Schreter immigrated to Montreal, Canada from Romania in the hope of a new life. After a year of going door to door, he opened a store on rue St-Dominique; the apartment upstairs accommodates the family. Following a few moves, he established the store at the corner of St-Laurent and de Montigny (now de Maisonneuve), where the business will continue to grow.

In 1948, Josephs's cousin, Irving Schreter, arrived in Canada and began working in the store. Over the next year, Imre, Josephs's brother, and Barry (Dov) Kratz, another cousin, joined the team. In 1958 Joseph sold the business to Irving, Imre and Dov to pursue other business interests.

In 1953, the J. Schreter company was incorporated. At the end of 1955, a major fire destroyed the store. The owners move the store to 4358, boulevard St-Laurent, corner Marie-Anne where it is still located today. Following Imre's death in the 1960s and after Dov retired in 1980, Irving continued to run the business with his two sons, Steve and Joey, both of whom worked in the family business during their studies. . Joey joined the company full time in 1976 and Steve in 1981. When Joseph opened the store, his philosophy was very simple: to ensure that the customer gets the best value for their money and that they leave satisfied. of his purchases. And that philosophy has continued to this day. Thus the "worry-free money-back guarantee" has become the adage of the store.

Great boot; problem with cleat flip key
January 3, 2026
These boots are exactly what I wanted at a great price. They fit perfectly (I wear an 8.5 and got the 8) and there is room for thick wool socks. The only problem I have is that the key to flip the cleats does not fit into the slots. It is not the key shown in the directions, and it is too fat to work properly. I contacted the company and talked to a very nice woman who said they have not had any complaints. And she is unable to send me the cleat in the photograph. So either I have an odd key that others do not have or for some reason others can get this key to fit into the slots. I can flip the cleats with great effort and pressure - forcing the key into the slot. But for this I have to take the boots off. I was hoping to be able to flip them when out and about - going from an icy parking lot into a store, for example, without taking them off. I am going to try to make some sort of key (one that looks like the one in the directions) so I can use the boots more efficiently - and in the way I intended. Other than this key issue, they are GREAT boots. They are waterproof, warm and very comfortable. I wore them shopping and from parking garage (walking through snow and ice) to inside the store, they were comfortable. They soles are good - lots of traction. The sole is wide enough so you don’t feel unstable, but planted securely on the ground. So I will work on the key issue. Hopefully I can come up with something that will fit in the little key pocket and let me flip the cleats easily and without taking the boots off. Good customer service too. Nice representative who got back to me quickly. I think she cared, but there is nothing she can do.
Pros
  • Warm, stable, good traction, waterproof. Comfortable even with thick wool socks. Fit is good.
Cons
  • The key that came with the boots is not the one shown in the directions. It does not fit. It fits in the side pocket that holds the key, but it does not fir into the slots in the boot that flip the cleats. It is hard plastic and too fat. The one in the directions

Canadians have skinny legs?

I purchased this boot from the Warming House - excellent service. These boots are well made, waterproof (tested), and warm, but very small thru the ankles - difficult to zip up for me (the reason for 4 stars not 5). I love the optional spikes and the ability to switch them off when entering a building which is the reason I kept the boots despite tight ankles (would not be able to put on a wool sock with them).
Pros
  • Great traction with or without the spikes
  • Warm
  • Waterproof
Cons
  • Way too tight thru the ankles, would be unable to put on a pair of wool socks.
